News Flash 10.2021 - Covid-19 Vaccine in Cancer Patients

Covid-19 vaccine appears to have high efficacy in patients with cancer. Findings from five studies recently presented at the ESMO (European Society for Medical Oncology) Congress 2021, suggest that cancer patients respond to vaccination regardless of current oncology treatment, with a good safety profile.

In 3,813 patients who participated in one of the studies, and who had a history of past or active malignancy, vaccine efficacy was ˃90% - which was similar to that of the efficacy observed in the overall study population comprising 43,331 evaluable participants age ≥12 years.

Safety findings, as well, were similar for patients with cancer and those of the overall population, both in incidence and type of adverse events, while no vaccine-related deaths were reported.

In summary, evidence collected so far suggests that vaccination protects a large number of patients after the second dose with a favorable safety profile, while a booster shot could increase efficacy for more patients.

Education on vaccination in patients and caregivers must continue alongside self-protection measures.
